Well, it has been a little longer than I would like, however, we have been so busy in our classroom! This post is a few weeks late but I have to share the fun with you. We spent the month of October learning about volcanoes and famous eruptions that have happened all over the world. We especially talked about Pompeii and the eruption of Mount St. Helens. We also read the Magic Tree House book about the eruption of Pompeii.
Last year I thought it would be really neat to paper mache volcanoes and do an eruption experiment but we never got to it. So this year I said I would make time to do that. Wow, with all my excitement leading up to the project it was completely obvious that I was completely uneducated about the process of paper mache. IT IS A MESS!!!! But the kids sure had a ton of fun doing it and that makes it worth it! I learned a cool trick to make this process a little easier. If you use liquid starch it works the exact same as flour and water or glue and water. It is very cheap to buy at the store and it takes away the mixing factor. WELL WORTH IT!
Here are some pictures of our process. We made our volcanoes, painted them and then erupted them. We also spent time creating an imaginary island on a continent of our choice that included a special land feature like our volcanoes. It was a memorable learning experience for all of us and we had a blast doing it!
Have a WONDERFUL Wednesday! Happy Learning!
