This week I want to post about Team Building. This is so very important to a classroom community. I believe one of the best assets to my beginning of the year instruction is to do a lot of team building activities. I have found that the students in my room have an increased respect and encouragement towards one another when a team atmosphere is emphasized. Believe me...I spent the first few years of my teaching not encouraging this as much. I then attended a Kagan training, decided to implement it in my classroom and now I see a drastic difference in the way my students respond to one another. I do a lot of different team activities. However I want to share one of my very favorite that I do the very first week of school. After my teams are established I ask my teams to come up with a team name and make a poster reflecting their name. After this they come up with 5 rules that they promise to follow in order to make their team stand out in Mrs. Branham's room. Here is an overview of what my students came up with:
My class really enjoyed this activity and I love looking at their finished posters! It is important to remember that if you decide later in the year to move your teams around you will need to start over and do all your team building activities again to encourage the same unity. It is well worth the time!
Until next time...Have a GREAT Tuesday evening!
