It's a New YEAR! Welcome 2015!

Welcome Back to School!

Today was the first day back from Christmas break for our students.  We had a great day full of learning!  I was so happy to find that my students remembered all the procedures and rules for our classroom and that I had very little, if any, review to do.

This week we are learning about RESOLUTIONS!  This time of the year is such a great time to set new goals and for students to feel like they have a fresh start to the year.  That is why I love focusing on goals and resolutions first week back from break.  If you haven't read Squirrel's New Year's Resolution it is a great book to read to kick off talk about resolutions.
While on break I pondered what my resolutions for this new year would be.  Of course, you have the usual lose weight.  I have a church goal.  Of course, I need to blog more.  :-)  But in thinking of my classroom goal I decided the one thing I would like to do more in my class is...Listen more, talk less! As teachers we always feel the need to be the one in control.  We know this is not what is always best for our students in the learning process but it JUST HAPPENS, we tend to dominate the conversation in our classroom.  So my goal is to be more mindful of encouraging student leadership in learning and especially encouraging them to ask more questions in their learning.  Allowing them to have control in the learning and conversations.

So back to the classroom:

Today we made a Resolution Flip Book.  Our book had four sections:

-One way I can be a better student.
-Something I want to stop doing.
-Person in my class I want to get to know better.
-2 Books I'd like to read.

Here are some examples you can look at:

What's Happening in Second!

They really put some thought into this and they turned out so good.  We had so much fun making these!  Tomorrow we will start writing our paper about our resolutions and make an action plan to help us achieve our goals.  I am looking forward to a great 2015!

Hope you are having a great start to the year.  Have a TERRIFIC TUESDAY!
