Spelling Fun!

Hi Friends!  It has been over a week since I have been on here to share.  Where did time go?

Today I am very excited to share with you a Kagan Structure we use for Spelling.  My students love to practice their Spelling words using MIX-PAIR-SHARE.

First I have the students pick one spelling word from our list and have them write it on an index card being very careful to spell it correctly.

After this I turn on some great dancin' music and the students mix up in the room enjoying some dancing and moving around. (YMCA, TWIST AND SHOUT, etc)  When the music stops the students put their hand up high in the air and find a partner. When they find a partner they give their partner a high five and stand back-to-back.  When I give the "go" the students then turn around and quiz their partner on their spelling word.  I work with the students on how to praise and coach all through out the year.  At this point in the year they are getting very good at this!  When they finish quizzing their partner they switch cards with their partner and stand back to back very quietly until all teams are finished.  As all groups finish up I start the music again...

My students love this fun way to do spelling and it is such a great way to get the students up and moving around.  The smiles are ENDLESS!
